How to Extract Tables from PDF — Complete Guide

June 8, 2025 · FreePDFNest Team

Tables trapped in PDFs are one of the most frustrating data problems. You can see the data, but you can't sort, filter, or calculate with it until it's in a spreadsheet.

How FreePDFNest Detects Tables

PDF to Excel uses two extraction modes:

Table Detection (Auto): Analyzes the X/Y positions of every text element on the page. Elements at similar Y positions are grouped into rows. Distinct X position clusters become columns. This creates a structured grid from unstructured PDF text.

Text Lines (Simple): Each horizontal line of text becomes one row, one column. Best for simple lists or documents without clear table structure.

Tips for Best Results

PDFs with clear, consistent table formatting extract most accurately. Merged cells, nested tables, and cells spanning multiple lines may need manual cleanup after extraction.
