How to Convert Google Docs to PDF (And Vice Versa)

March 16, 2025 · FreePDFNest Team

Google Docs and PDF serve different stages of document workflow. Docs for editing and collaboration, PDF for final sharing. Here's how to move between them seamlessly.

Google Docs → PDF

Method 1 (Recommended): File → Download → PDF Document. This produces the cleanest result with proper formatting preservation.

Method 2: File → Print → Save as PDF. Same result but routes through the print system.

Method 3: File → Email as attachment → select PDF. Exports and emails in one step.

PDF → Google Docs

Method 1: Upload the PDF to Google Drive, then right-click it → Open with → Google Docs. Google automatically converts the PDF to an editable document with OCR for scanned files.

Method 2: Convert the PDF to Word first using FreePDFNest PDF to Word (Editable Text mode for better results), then upload the .docx to Google Drive and open in Docs.

Which Method for PDF → Docs?

Google's direct conversion is convenient but often struggles with complex layouts, tables, and formatting. The two-step method (PDF → Word → Docs) typically produces better results because FreePDFNest's text extraction preserves more structure.

Tips

Fonts: Google Docs has a limited font library. If your PDF uses unusual fonts, they'll be substituted.

Images: Both methods preserve images, but positioning may shift in complex layouts.

Tables: Simple tables convert well. Complex nested tables may need manual cleanup.
