How to Compare Two PDF Documents — Spot Differences

March 29, 2025 · FreePDFNest Team

Comparing PDF documents is crucial for legal reviews, contract negotiations, report revisions, and quality assurance. Here's how to identify differences without expensive software.

Method 1: Convert to Word, Use Track Changes

Convert both PDFs to Word using FreePDFNest PDF to Word (Editable Text mode). Open both Word files, then use Word's Compare feature: Review tab → Compare → Compare. Word highlights every addition, deletion, and change.

Method 2: Side-by-Side Visual Comparison

Open both PDFs in separate browser windows and place them side by side (on Windows: Win+Left Arrow and Win+Right Arrow). Scroll through pages simultaneously to spot visual differences. This works well for layout-focused documents.

Method 3: Convert to Images

Convert both PDFs to images using PDF to Image, then compare the images visually. For automated comparison, image diff tools can highlight pixel-level differences between pages.

What to Look For

Text changes: Modified wording, added or removed paragraphs, changed numbers or dates.

Formatting changes: Font changes, shifted margins, altered spacing.

Structural changes: Added or removed pages, reordered sections.

Sneaky changes: In contracts, watch for changes in small print, liability clauses, and payment terms — these are often modified subtly.
